The Canning Trust
News for January 2010:

Nchima - The Canning Trust has financed 2 medical students in Malawi and their Autumn 09 newsletter reveals the killer statistic that Malawi has just 250 doctors to cover a population of 13 million! One of the students at the school was a goat herdsman in the day, studied at a library in the evening, passed his exams and has now been accepted to train as a doctor at the same School as our two guys.
TESFA - the prolific founder Dana Roskey passed through the UK en route to Ethiopia at Christmas where he will open the 7th school (the Trust helped finance school no.4). He wants to report back at our next meeting in March on the Cafe project (financed by the Trust last March). He wants to team up with a Fair Trade coffee supplier and will give us news about this and possible new involvement in South America on his return in March 2010.
Alive & Kicking - this charity we supported with the financing of 300 balls in 2008 has just published its result for 2009. Incredibly, they have distributed practically 250,000 balls adorned with HIV/AIDS messages. With the unprecedented attention on football in Africa this year they may not have enough stitchers in their 3 factories to meet demand.
Dogodogo - run by Julia Kruse's enterprising uncle Bernhard Staub, this charity benefits street children in Tanzania and nearly had to stop operating through lack of sponsorship at the end of 2009. The UK Minister of Overseas Development stepped in when he heard of their plight and has secured its viability for 2010. This month, Bernhard has proposed that our trust finance a small staff house for a Volunteer to train their youngsters on a Fire Engine donated by the Youth Fire Brigade of Hamburg! What's next?
What is the Canning Trust?
Since 1985 the Trust has donated almost half a million pounds to good causes, split 80% to the Developing World and 20% to the UK.
We typically like to give to small start-ups or where there is a concrete project or initiative; where the aim is to assist with relief, caring for the needy, sick and aged; promoting education and is non-religious.
We meet about 3 times a year and like to see people, who are active in the project, give us a chance to find out who they are and what they are trying to achieve.
If you come across someone who is actively trying to set up or develop a charitable project,
please give us, the Trust, the opportunity to find out who they are and what they are trying to achieve. Email us at enquiry@canning.co.uk
